About Fannie Blafer
Fannie lived a long and full life. Mentally, she was aware and alert into he early 80's. Then, a slow process of senile atrophy began. She continued to function until her death. At that time, she remembered who her children were but had little recall of other people and events in her life history.
When she realized that she was losing her memory, she was very upset. As time went on, she evaluated her attitude as 'content'. Eventually, she was unaware of her condition.
It is interesting to note that Fannie's father died when she was 15 years old, a victim of stomach cancer. He was a heavy smoker. (Her mother died a few months after being hit by a car. She died of a brain injury.) Fannie had 3 brothers and a sister. Two of the brothers, Willy and Hy, were heavy smokers and both died relatively young. One died of lung cancer and the other of heart problems. Fannie, her oldest brother, Sol, and her sister, Bessie, were non-smokers. Fannie died at 96-1/2 years of senile atrophy. Sol died at age 93 years after failed elective kidney transplant surgery. Bessie died at age 97-1/2.
