About Frederick Steele Miller (Fred) Murray

One player lost to the Ponsonby club during the reorganisation which went with the establishment of district football was Fred Murray. He'd come to light as a utility forward of unusual talent in 1891, when he represented Auckland as a 19-year-old. However, he lived outside the club's new boundaries and transferred to City.

He was in the 1893 All Black team which visited Australia, a trip he was to repeat in 1897. Selected for the 1896 New Zealand team to play Queensland but withdrew because of a family bereavement. Without question, he was one of the leading players of his day but something of a nomad, playing for Ponsonby, City, Newton (1892-93) and Parnell (1895-99), with a stint in Hamilton during 1894 thrown in for good measure.

He played 20 matches for New Zealand, 26 for Auckland and a couple for North Island in the days before the Inter-Island fixture became an annual event. That total of 48 appearances was very high for the time. After his playing days were over he became a notable administrator in Auckland and served as a selector for two years. He was made a Life Member of the Union in 1905. Also an Auckland cricket representative.

For more than sixty years his rugby record has been overstated in reference books. Starting with A.J. Billington's Auckland Union history, published in 1933, it has been accepted that Murray made his debut in 1887, and had another four games in 1889. The same record was repeated in his Rugby Almanack obituary and other more recent works. Murray seems to have sold all our historians a giant-sized dummy.

If he had played in 1887, he would have been 15 years old at the time. In 1889 he was only 17. In fact the player concerned was T. Murray, of Albert and later Gordon. The latter, who played in the same positions as Fred, had his Auckland career deemed to be nonexistent. The Auckland Football Annual makes it quite clear that our man did not appear until 1891. Sadly for Ponsonby, he was lost within a few months. They could have used him in the tougher times which lay ahead.
