About Georgina Đuka Tesla

Georgina “Djuka” Tesla (née Mandic) was born in 1822 in Tomingaj, Gracac as the fourth (out of eight) child of Serbian Orthodox priest father Nikola (1800–1863) and mother Sofija (née Budisavljevic). Georgina's brothers included Metropolitan Nikolaj Mandic (1840–1907 and Serbian Orthodox priest Toma Mandic (1827–1906). The Mandic family is originally one of the oldest Serbian families in Lika. In 1845, she married her husband Milutin. Georgina was multi-talented, inventing many improvements for farm work and household chores, and lived long enough to enjoy the fame of her son Nikola, whose inherited genius for inventing she cultivated during his youth. Georgina Tesla died in the town of Gospic on April 4, 1892 at the age of 71. She was buried alongside her husband in the village of Divoselo.

Wikipedia tells us that Nikola Tesla's mother was "talented in making home craft tools and memorized many Serbian epic poems, but never learned to read.[10] Tesla's biographer John O'Neill relates that "the Tesla and Mandić families originally came from the western part of Serbia near Montenegro."
