About Hans Jacobson

submitted by David Glasson --- Research by my Mother and myself documents this Hans Jacobson (Jacobsson) is the correct Hans who came from Malmo, Sweden and immigrated to Australia, then New Zealand in the 1850s. Please contact me for further information.

submitted by Peter McGavin --- Note: Evidence fairly conclusively suggests that Hans Jacobson born 13th Oct 1838 to Ola Jacobson (occupation smith) and wife Bengta, in Brandstad is a different person to the Hans Jacobson from Malmo who emigrated to Australia, then to New Zealand and married Catherine Delaney. The former Hans Jacobson appears to have remained in Europe.

Obituary suggests Hans Jacobson arrived in Melbourne about 1854. Appears to be in New Zealand by 1865. Affidavit suggests born c1837.

NZ Naturalisation 23 Apr 1874.

Owned the Club Hotel in Reefton, New Zealand. This hotel burned down on 2 Aug 1892.

Wairarapa Daily Times, 20 Nov 1905: A West Coast Pioneer died in Wellington on Friday in the person of Mr Hans Jacobson. Mr Jacobson was a resident of Reefton in the early seventies. He kept an hotel there for many years. At one time he was prominently identified with the mining industry. The deceased, who was seventy-two years old, leaves a widow and grown-up family.

Grey River Argus, 20 Nov 1905: Mr Hans Jacobson, who left Reefton in company with his son, Mr William Jacobson, for Wellington on Monday last died there on Friday surrounded by his family. He leaves a widow and an adult family of six sons and three daughters. The deceased was aged 71 years, and a native of Malmo, South Sweden, and had been in the colonies for 51 years arriving in Melbourne in 1884. Under a will executed upwards of twenty years ago the deceased bequeathed his entire property to his widow.

Not to be confused with another Hans Jacobson who arrived in Wellington NZ from London on the "Wild Duck" 28 Jan 1860 - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/WildDuck1859-1860....
