About Hector William Parkes
Father's initial is wrong, but age & location are a match:

AWATUNA EAST. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
Rather a severe accident happened to young Hector Parkes, son of Mr. G. Parkes on Wednesday last. In front of Mr Graham's house on the road to Awatuna he was experimenting with a pin on an old dynamite cartridge, which he had got from an old camping place of a former contracting party, which worked in the locality. As he was poking some dirt out of one of the crevices the thing exploded, and blew off the middle finger of his right hand, besides seriously damaging some of the other fingers. He was taken to Kaponga, where Mr Maclagan attended to him, and I understand that he is now progressing satisfactorily. The accident has been bad enough in all conscience, but it might have been much worse) and it should act as a wanning to others to be very careful of any stray cartridges they might happen to find at any of these old camps.

Worked with, I assume, an Uncle (A.E. Parkes) when first starting as a mechanic:

LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A party of local pig hunters, headed by Hector Parkes and Fred Losech, journeyed to Mangaminga on Sunday last on a hunting expedition, and succeeded in killing two fine boars (says the Opunake Times). They report that wild pigs are very plentiful in the district mentioned, large numbers having been destroyed by hunters during the year. This wild pig menace is a matter of concern to sheep owners, one man near Mangamingi stating that his loss was in the vicinity of 1000 yearly.
(I expect "Fred Losech" is Ernst Frederick Loesch - his wife's sister's husband)
