My father Robert grew up in Prague. The family lived on the Altstadter Ring in a beautiful old house which had a heiligenbilt (holy picture) painted at the front and there were curved columns Lauben. There was a secret connection to the church next to the house (Theinkirche is the name of the church). When my father needed some relaxation he went directly to church. As a young man he did not have much time to meet girls as he was the main supporter of the family. When he was close to thirty, he went to a wedding of a friend in a temple. Standing there next to his brother-in-law, Semi Winterlutz, he saw three beautiful girls standing downstairs all dressed alike in white and pink lace dresses and velvet bows. " Who is that beautiful blue eyed girl with black hair?" my father asked and the answer was " This ist Helene Adler, the second daughter of Joseph and Francisca Adler from Pilsen." " I want to marry her," my father said. He hired a wagon with four horses, brought gifts and went to Pilsen announced himself at the family Adler at Riegergasse II in Pilsen. Mother was called in and grandfather said, "Mr. Altshul gives us the honor to ask for your hand in marriage." Mother started to cry. "But I am still so young," she cried. (She was not yet seventeen) So father left. One year later he tried again, he brought more jewelry and more gifts. Helene was asked again and as her father was in financial trouble and only the oldest daughter was married, mother gave her consent. She married out of loyalty for her parents and to make room for her sisters, but I don't think she ever regretted it and I think the marriage of my parents was an exceptionally good one. She respected him and never had a thought of another man. She worshiped his intelligence and was proud to carry his name.

The fifth child was my mother. She went to the only German school in Pilsen. She knew how to cook with the smallest amount of eggs, how to sew, how to save material and to buy little, but the best -which came to her advantage after the first world war and fathers' fortune disappeared with our Austrian Goldcrown.
