Biography

Henry Andrews was born about 1608 likely in England.[2]

Henry married Mary around 1627.[3]

Henry was included in the list of freeman from Cohannet dated March 7, 1636.[4]

Henry was one of the original purchasers of Taunton in 1638 and was admitted one of the first 7 freeman of Taunton on December 4.[5]

He was deputy to the General Court in 1639, the first year any were chosen, and was selected 1642-4, 1647 and 1649.[5]

In 1641, he received a grant of 40 acres, with six others, lying together in a convenient place for their great charges attending courts, laying out of lands and other occasions for the town.[5]

Henry built the first meeting house in Taunton and was paid with a parcel of land conveyed by deed dated 11 day 2 mo. 1647. The land was described as a "neck of land" called the "calves pasture".[6]

Henry was one of the first stockholders of the first Iron Works.[7]

His will was dated March 13, 1652 and was proved on February 10, 1653/4, listing his wife Mary, children Henry, Mary (wife of William Hodges), Sarah, Abigail, and grandson John Hodges. Research Notes ==*The descendants of Henry Andrews-82 of Taunton (this profile) are often confused with descendants of John Andrews-843 of Boston. The situation is likely made worse by the fact that the two lines intersect, atleast, with Ebenezer Andrews-5208, son of Samuel Andrews-5207 (a descendant of John) and Mary Pitts-1969 (a descendant of Henry).

  • Drummond cites History of Norton as an example of a published confusion crediting a branch to Henry's family which really belonged to John's. It is not clear whether this is a book or another NEHGS article (i.e. Register, vol. 40, p. 21 (1886)) but the latter seems likely.
