Death of a Shoalhaven Pioneer. —

By the death, in Sydney, on Thursday, at the ripe age of 83, of Mr Henry Hodgkinson, sen., one of the few remaining links connecting the present with the early days of the Shoalhaven is broken, that esteemed octogenarian having been actively identified with the fortunes of the district for over half a century.

In the earliest period of the South Coast's history he was engaged in the seafaring enterprise, and ran a trading vessel between Sydney and here, often taking the Shoalhaven entrance on his passage in and out, as at that time what is now the broad waters of the canal was but a narrow shallow stream, which was difficult to navigate except at high water, and frequently unfavourable weather caused delay for days, especially if unfortunate enough to get on to what was then known as the flats.

Shortly after Mr Hodgkinson, sen., took a voyage into matrimony, and settled down in Terrara in the business of store keeping, at the principal shipping part of the district, known as Adams's Wharf, where he laid the foundation of a comfortable competency, which was being constantly added to.

About 1856 he disposed of his business to the late Mr Thomas Holmes, and then retired to his farm, now known as Forest Lodge.

In 1883 he had the misfortune to lose by death his wife, who was a sister (in-law) of Mr John McArthur, J.P.

Some time after the death of Mrs Hodgkinson he removed to Sydney, where he resided up to the time of his decease. Mr Hodgkinson leaves a numerous family of sons and daughters.

The remains were brought from Sydney by train on Friday and interred in tho Nowra Cemetery, a number of grandsons from Sydney being present at the funeral, but Mr H E. Hodgkinson and Mrs Dr Mathews, deceased's son and daughter, were unfortunately prevented from paying their last tribute to their beloved father through being prostrated by severe and protracted illnesses. The Rev. O. J. M'Coy officiated, and the cortege was numerous.

Illawarra Mercury Tue 22 Aug 1899

Mr. Henry Hodgkinson, sen., who was for many years a Shoalhaven district resident, having his home at Forest Lodge, Meroo, died on Thursday last at the residence of his son, Mr. George Hodgkinson, Paddington (formerly stationmaster at Wollongong), at the ripe age of 84 years.

He had been ill a comparatively short time, and was for some weeks past attended by Dr. T. Matthews, of Nowra (his son-in-law).

The deceased, whose wife died some sixteen years ago; leaves a large number of grown-up sons and daughters, including Mr. H. R. Hodgkinson and Mrs. (Dr.) Matthews, of Nowra, and Mrs. Harry Robson, of Wollongong.

His remains were brought from Sydney by the mid-day train on Friday and in the afternoon were interred at the Nowra General Cemetery, a good many old friends, despite the unpropitious state of the weather, attending the burial service at the grave.

Henry Hodgkinson moved to Paddington after his wife Jane died. He must have been in touch with his wife's half sister Martha:

Martha Alcorn Allerton is the daughter of Richard and Eliza Leeming, half sister of Jane Hodgkinson.
