London to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, British Colonial America, arriving on 1632 Jun 12 on the ship 'James'

Henry Sherburne (March 28, 1611 – 1680) of Portsmouh New Hampshire landed there June 12, 1632 from London, came over on the 'James', and he was a pioneer who rose to considerable wealth in pre-independence colonial New Hampshire. His descendant Samuel Sherburne built the 1766 (and later) house which bears Henry's name today in Portsmouth. Henry was the older brother of John Sherburne, another New Hampshire pioneer. Colonel Tobias Lear, George Washington's private secretary, was his great grandson. Sherburne & his brother John were lineal descendants of the illustrious "Sherburne" (or Shireburn) family of England (their ancestors progressively built Stonyhurst Hall in Lancashire, England but lost it when the elder branch of the family, which remained there, became extinct in 1717).

After Henry's great grandfather quit Stonyhurst for Oxford, England, where he dwelled in Beam Hall, Henry's father Joseph moved to Odiham, where Henry was born. While it's unknown where he was educated, in the New World Sherburne's classical education & fine court hand quickly proved useful. According to one source, Henry came to Portsmouth from London, arriving June 12, 1632 in the ship, James. By 1640 he was a warden of the Church of England in Portsmouth, & was thereafter selected as town clerk (1656–1660), treasurer, & commissioner of Portsmouth.

In 1644 he was appointed judge at Portsmouth & later associate justice by Massachusetts. He was a large landowner in Portsmouth. He married twice; 1st to the daughter of New Hampshire pioneer Ambrose Gibbons, Rebecca Gibbons by whom he had many children who have since spread about the New World In 1667, Sherburne’s 1st wife, Rebecca Gibbons, died.Three years later in 1670 he remarried, to widow Sarah Abbott. Notes that the couple kept a home that was “not always serene.” Yet Sherburne's life had a more boisterous side. He was active in laying out land into lots in Portsmouth, & more than once this brought him into court to settle differences of opinion involving land ownership. He also appears in court records giving testimony regarding a case of slander.

In 1665, agitators in New Hampshire were attempting to rid themselves of oversite from Massachusetts. Sherburne was summoned to Massachusetts to answer for himself, facing accusations of sedition.

And in 1671, Sherburne appears in a case involving a fight. Thomas Avery, a witness, said Sherburne & John Keniston had engaged in a brawl early in the winter of 1670. Keniston had been in trouble with the courts & had settled on property in Greenland.

Avery reported seeing the start of the argument & witnessed Sherburne challenging Keniston to step outside. Sherburne’s wife then fetched him, & he found Sherburne outside: “I went out & Sherburne’s face was black as if he had been grievously beaten & I took him up. But I saw not any blows between them.” Keniston would later be killed by Indians in 1677 & his house burned.

Sherburne, meanwhile, survived the fight, but he had another enemy looming. Edward Bickford & his wife Mary had bought property in the Sagamore Creek area of Portsmouth. They ran a licensed tavern & farm.

The Bickfords relations with Sherburne entered their final phase in 1680. Sherburne sued Bickford for damage done to his property by Bickford’s livestock- cattle, horses & pigs. A jury cleared Bickford. Sherburne made a 2nd complaint against Bickford. This time he charged that Bickford’s children were stealing pears.

Within months, Sherburne was dead. The authorities declared that Sherburne’s death was suspicious. The Bickfords were called to the court at Dover to answer questions about Sherburne’s death, but records show the court could reach no conclusion. The Bickfords were “set at liberty” until such time as the court had more evidence.

Sherburnes’s death was left unexplained, “by some strange accident being taken.”When he died in 1680, he was one of the richest men in town
