Jacob Lyon was born on July 30, 1771 in Morristown, Morris, New Jersey, United States and was baptized on September 1, 1771 in First Presbyterian Church,Morristown,Morris,New Jersey. His parents were Mattaniah "John" Lyon and Mary Lyon.

Jacob married Sarah Lyon. Together they had the following children:

• Charles Lyon;
• Elias Lyon;
• Hannah Lyon;
• Jacob Lyon;
• Stephen Lyon.

He died on February 24, 1826 in Ogdensburg, St Lawrence, New York, United States and was buried after February 24, 1826 in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York, USA.
