Mattaniah Lyon was born in 1722 in Newark, Essex, New Jersey, United States. His parents were Isaac Lyon and Hannah Lyon.

Mattaniah married Mary Lyon circa 1745 in NJ, United States. Together they had the following children:

• Capt. Abraham Lyon;
• Henry Lyon;
• John Lyon;
• Hannah Lyon;
• Stephen Smith Lyon;
• Harvah "Harvey" Lyon;
• Aaron Lyon;
• Dr. Isaac Lyon;
• Jacob Lyon.

He died on February 2, 1794 in Morristown, Morris, New Jersey, United States and was buried on April 2, 1794 in First Presbyterian Churchyard, Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey, United States.
