  • (A fluyt (archaic Dutch: fluijt), fluit, or flute is a Dutch type of sailing vessel originally designed as a dedicated cargo vessel. Originating in the Netherlands in the 16th century, the vessel was designed to facilitate transoceanic delivery with the maximum of space and crew efficiency. Unlike rivals, it was not built for conversion in wartime to a warship, so it was cheaper to build and carried twice the cargo, and could be handled by a smaller crew. Construction by specialized shipyards using new tools made it half the cost of rival ships. These factors combined to sharply lower the cost of transportation for Dutch merchants, giving them a major competitive advantage. The fluyt was a significant factor in the 17th century rise of the Dutch seaborne empire. In 1670 the Dutch merchant marine totalled 568,000 tons of shipping—about half the European total.http://translation.babylon-software.com/english/Fluyt/)

Source: Huguenot Memorial Museum

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Naude-76 Jacob Naude was part of the settlement of the Dutch Cape Colony. "Jacob NAUDÉ, the 6th. of 7 children of Philipp Naudé and Anne Isnard, of French Huguenot descent, was born in Berlin, Germany on 20 August 1696. He left the Netherlands as a naval cadet (adelborst) on board the (VOC) fluyt 'Abbekerk' from Texel, Holland, on 23 January 1718 arriving at the Cape of Good Hope on 19 May 1718. From 1 June 1718 to 2 May 1722 he was hired out by the D.E.I.C as a schoolmaster to 3 different Huguenot families. During this period he became a member of the Drakenstein Dutch Reformed Church. [1]"Jacob NAUDé, from Berlin of French descent. Born c. 1696. Died March 1740 (seems to be the 1-3-1740). Son of Philippe Naudé (Born Metz 1654) and Anna Isnard. Arrived at the Cape as Midshipman aboard the Abbekerk in 1710. Jacob became a teacher at the Cape. From 3 May 1720 he was schoolmaster in the service of Susanne TAILLEFERT, widow of Pierre CRONIER, on her farm Versailles. He married Susanne TAILLEFERT (*c.1685 + 13 February 1724) c. 1722. She was the daughter of Isaac TAILLEFERT (q.v.) and Susanne BRIET. (Look also under the stamvader Pierre Cronje for more information on her). Her funeral was held entirely in French, and Jacob Naudé paid 3 Rixdollars for it since French was no longer used in church services at that time. Following her death, Jacob Naudé raised their son who was seven months old when Susanne died, as well as her children from her previous marriages. In 1724 Jacob inherited the farm Champagne from Susanne’s brother Estienne, who died unmarried. In 1728 he sold the farm to Matthys Strydom. From 1739 to 1745 Naudé was 'koster' and 'voorleser' (sextant and reader) of the Drakenstein congregation. In 1745 he purchased the farm Klipvlei in the Waggenmakersvallei (Wellington) from Pieter Booysens. In 1766 Klipvlei was sold to Johann Franz Ophausen. b1 Jacob baptised 1 August 1723. Only son of Jacob Naudé and Susanne Taillefert. He was the first Naudé born in South Africa. " [2]JACOB was the 6th. of 7 children, and was the first NAUDÉ to immigrate to South Africa. On the 23rd. January 1718 he left Texel as a naval cadet (adelborst) on board the fluyt "Abbekerk", landing at the Cape of Good Hope on the 19th. May 1718 . He settled in Drakenstein and was accepted as a member of the Drakenstein Church. An entry is to be found in the "D.R.Church Membership Registers 1715-1785", [G3/4/1 Book 2194, State Archives, Pretoria] stating "Jacob Naudé met attestatie va n Hanover" ("Jacob Naudé with testemonial from Hanover"). From the 1st. June 1718 until the 3rd.May 1719 he was employed by Pierre Joubert the elder, as schoolmaster to his children at 10 guilders per month plus 1/2 pound tobacco. From the 3rd . May 1719 until the 2nd. May 1720 he was employed as schoolmaster to the children of Josua Selje (Cilliers) then from the 3rd. May 1720 until the 3rd. May 1722 he was schoolmaster to the children of Susanne Taillefert. After his marriage to Susanne in 1722, he applied to be released from the employ of the Dutch East India Company, and thus become a free burger. [3]

On 7 May 1722 he married Susanne TAILLEFERT, widow of Pierre Cronier (Cronjé), formerly widow of Jean Gardé. In 1723 Jacob applied to become a free burgher, and in July of that year christened his only child, a son Jacob. Susanne died on 13 February 1724 and Jacob (father) on 1 March 1740. [1]His original marriage contract/will is housed in the State Archives in Cape Town. (Wills, 1Stb. 18/5 #18). It was drawn up and signed by both Jacob and Susanne in the presence of Johan Pleunis, Secretary of Drakenstein (he was the son-in-law of Co rnelis Gerritz van Niekerk, patriarch of the van Niekerk lineage). [7]At the time of his marriage it appears as though Susanne transferred the farm "Olyvenhout" [30 morgen 550 sq. roods] in the Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington) to Jacob. This farm had been transferred to her by Estienne Cronier (Cronjé) in 1718. When she died in 1724 the farm was sold to Jan Nortjé for 3500 guilders. [7]PropertyOn page 103 of "The Huguenots of South Africa 1688-1988" by Pieter Coertzen, we read: "On 10.2.1722, Jacob made a long list of everything he had owed and still owed to Martinus Bergh, magistrate of Drakenstein. The amounts owed for the funeral , to the company and other small debts were expressed in rix-dollars, skillings, stivers, escalins and sous, while the larger debts were expressed in ècus and francs". On page 69 of "French Refugees at the Cape" by C.Graham Botha, we read: 'attac hed to the inventory of Mrs. Naudé's estate in 1724 is a document of monies due written in French'. This is to be found in the Cape Archives in 'Inventories, 1720 - 1727', (#91, 11 May 1724). [7]He inherited the farm 'Champagne' [30 morgen 40 sq. roods] situated on the Spruit River, a branch of the Krom River, from Susanne's estate. She in turn had inherited the farm after the death of Estienne Cronier on 2.9.1724, the bachelor brothe r of her late husband. She had already died by this time, and on 17.3.1725 the farm was registered in Jacob's name in his capacity as guardian of her children. In 1728 he sold the farm to Mathys Strydom for 2050 guilders. [7]DeathDate: Jacob Naudé passed away on 1 Mar 1740 / [in] [4] / 7 Dec 1774 [5][6]
