HESTER, JAMES EDWARD: Born in Louisa Co., 7/16/39. In the 1850s the family moved to Spotsylvania Co., where his father worked as an overseer. Enlisted in Co. M, 3/13/62. In hospital, with debility, 8/9/62-March/April'63. WIA, in the left elbow, at Gettysburg on 7/1/63. Was in Charlottesville Hospital until 9/16/63 after which he was presumably at home on wound furlough. Returned to duty March/April'64. Present for duty then through 12/31/64, final roll. Married Eugenia H. Chewning in Spotsylvania Co., 1/31/67 (5 children including twins). Was helping his parents run their tenant farm in Berkeley District, Spotsylvania Co. in 1870 and farming with his brother, Charles, in Louisa Co. by 1880. In 1888 he applied for a pension, stating he had virtually lost the use of his left arm as a consequence of the long term affects of his Gettysburg wound. Despite this, he and Eugenia managed to continue running their smallholding in Louisa for many years. She died in 1917, after which he lived with his daughter Sarah and her family until his own death, on 4/25/1925. Buried at Oakland Cemetery, Louisa C.H.. [Elder brother of Charles N.
