About James Reynolds

James Reynolds was born after 1675 at Petsoe Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia. He was the son of William Reynolds (d 1701) and his wife Elizabeth Merryman.

James Reynolds signed a will on 8 February 1723 in Essex Co., VA., which was probated on 16 June 1724 at St. Anne’s Parish there.

Family

James Reynolds (d 1724) married Susannah (b abt 1679, d aft 1737) by 1695 at Petsoe Parish. Her last name is seen as Lightfoot. She survived James, and married a Mr. Hollland about 1725.

The eight children of Susannah and James Reynolds were:

  3. Elizabeth Reynolds, b. Aft 1700, Essex County, Virginia. Married a Mr. Banks.
  4. Joseph Reynolds, b. Aft 1700, Essex County, Virginia, d. Aft 1772, Caroline County, Virginia. Married Elizabeth Hawkins.
  5. Benjamin Reynolds, b. Bef 1704, St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, Virginia, d. Aft 1739, Caroline County, Virginia. Married Sarah.
  6. Violetta Reynolds, b. Aft 1708, Essex County, Virginia. Violetta Reynolds and her husband John Rutherford, Jr. brought suit of petition in Essex Co., VA in February 1727, against the estate of her father, James Reynolds, deceased. They were attempting to secure her share of the estate which had been assigned to her in her father's will dated February 8, 1723/4. (381)

  • Unto my beloved son James Rennolds half this divident of land, it being 500 acres where he now dwelleth, and two Negroes Billy and Frances which he hath in possession and five pound to be paid in a store.
  • Unto my beloved wife the thirds of my estate and the chest of draws.
  • Unto my beloved son Benja. Rennolds and my grandson William Rennolds the other half of the devident to be equally divided between them, only my son Benjamin to have the first choice.
  • Unto my son Benja. Rennolds the land up at my Negro Quarter where Toney and Moll dwelleth together with four Negroes and three of them workers.
  • Unto my beloved daughter Violetta Rennolds two Negros at the day of marriage and one of them a worker.
  • Unto my daughter Hannah Rennolds two Negros at the day of marriage and one of them a worker.
  • To my daughter Susanna Rennolds two Negros at the day of marriage and one of them a worker.
  • Unto my son Joseph Rennolds all my lands in Gloster and two Negros, one of them a worker and the age of one twenty.
  • If any of you should dye without issue lawfully begotten then to fall to the next male are [heir].
  • My two sons James Rennolds and Benja. Rennolds executors.
  • Unto my daughter Elizabeth Banks one gold ring, she having had her part before.

  • THIS INDENTURE made the Nineteenth and Twentieth day of Septr. in the year 1737 Between BENJAMIN REYNOLDS & SARAH his Wife & SUSANNA HOLLAND his mother of the County of CAROLINE & Colony of Virga. Planters of the one part and JAMES RENNOLDS JUR of the Parish of St. Anne & County of Essex Carpenter of the other part Witnesseth that sd Benjamin Rennolds & Sarah his Wife & Susanna Holland his Mother for the sum Fourty two pounds currt moray he the sd Benjamin Rennolds & Sarah his Wife and Susanna Holland his Mother doth grant unto ye sd James Rennolds his heirs & assigns all that tract of land in the Parish of St. Annes on the branches of Occupacie Run it being part of a Patent granted to LEONARD TARENT for Nine hundred and twenty acres bearing date the Eight day of May 1716 which said Tract of land containing Two hundred and thirty acres is bounded Beginning at a white oak in the sd James Rennolds line running thence South the division line between the sd Benja & CORDILIA HIPKINS thence North North West along the line of the sd James Rennolds to the beginning all which sd premises now are in the actual possession of the sd James Rennolds by vertue of Indenture of Bargaine and Sale for the term of one year and by vertue of the Statute of Transferring uses into possession . .

William Reynolds (b 1655-d bef 1 Jan 1701) was the son of Cornelius Reynolds (d 1685) & unknown [Seen as Marjorie Carter]. Married Elizabeth Merryman, daughter of John & Audrey Merryman. 6 children: Robert, James, William, John, Cornelius, and Elizabeth who married Brumfield Long.
