His brother (= cousin Lambert Janse Dorlandt) came in 1663. They were the progenitors of all branches of the family known today by at least six distinct forms of the name which in the original Dutch signifies "dry ground or land". The Dutch patronymic system of naming children suggests that the father of the immigrant Dorlandts may have been Gerret Dorlandt or Gerret Van der Lind. The ancestor took the oath of allegiance in the village of Brooklyn in 1687, adding that his length of residence was 35 years thus establishing his 1654 arrival. He settled first near the present Fulton Street Ferry and by 1657 had 40 acres in the village of Bedford on the road from the ferry to Flatbush. In 1687 he was elected commissioner of Brooklyn.
