About Jesse George Stratford

Jesse George was the third of nine children born to Edwin Stratford and Marianna Crabb. He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa during the family's emigration from England to the Salt Lake Valley in 1861. His childhood was spent in Providence (near Logan), Utah; the family moving to Ogden when he was 11 years old. At the age of 15, he began working as an office boy for an Ogden lawyer.

Jesse George married Roseltlha Ballantyne November 23, 1882. He served as treasurer of Weber County from 1888-1892. In 1902, he moved his family to Logan and, in 1908, to Pocatello where he, with his brother Egbert, and others, founded the Gate City Furniture Company. Later the partnership was dissolved and he formed the Stratford Furniture Company. He sold the business to his son, Rae P. Stratford in 1944. An enthusiastic hunter and angler, he took part in the activities after he was more than 80 years old. Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was Sunday school superintendent in the Ogden Fourth ward for many years and was a member of the Pocatello Stake high council for more than 20 years.

He died at his Pocatello home located at 517 South Arthur after three weeks illness with pneumonia at age 90. He was the father of eleven children: Jesse George Jr., Iva Roseltha, Ina Rosetta, Pearl, Rae Percy, Ruby, Clyde Ballantyne, Vera, Ralph Ballantyne, Richard Clare, and Rebecca.
