About John Carpenter
Notes for John Carpenter:
He probably served in the Revolutionary War. There is a record for a John Carpenter on a "Revolutionary claim, Act 18th March, 1818" document as follows (quotes are handwritten): "John Carpenter" of "Green County" in the state of "Kentucky" who was a "private" in the regiment commanded by Colonel "Gist" of the "Virginia" line, for the term of "3 years". [New section] Inscribed on the roll of "Kentucky" at the rate of "8--" Dollars per month, to commence on the "28" of "April 1818". [New section] Certificate of Pension issued the "5" of "Sep 1819" and "[Sent?] to John Barrett Esqr Clerk of the County Court of Green County, Kentucky" [New section] Arrears to 4th of "Sep 1819, 16 mos 7/30 [=] 129.86" Semi-anll all'ce ending "4 March 1820 [=] 48.-- [Total] $177.86.
There is another handwritten note: "Transferred to Indiana 9th May 1828, to take effect from and after [the?] March 1828, & notification sent to Pensions, at Bloomington, Ind."

John Carpenter served under Capt. Samuel Jordan Cabell, 6th Virginia Battalion, Lt. Col. Hendricks on 17th Feb. 1776 with pay in 1777 and 1778 with Rifleman Col. Van Morgan (53581). Sergeant John Carpenter in 1777 enlisted in Amherst County, Virginia for three years in Capt. Samuel Lapsley's Company of the 12th Continental Line (army) of Col. Daniel Morgan's Virginia Unit. John Carpenter also enlisted in a Company that was from Botetourt County of Covington, Virginia and two of his first cousins also served earlier or were serving with John, them being Amos Carpenter and Solomon Carpenter, descendants of Joseph Carpenter. In 1784 Sgt. John Carpenter of Amherst County, VA was granted 400 acres of land in Kentucky for his service in the Continental Line in the Revolutionary War. He moved with his wife and family to Green County, KY by 1802. Sgt. John Carpenter in 1827 moved to Monroe County, Indiana to be under the immediate care and protection of his children. He then resided in 1830 in Owen County with six of his sons.
From the Journal of Illinois State Historical Society, Vol. 8, Number 3, Oct. 1915, page 441, as reported by Richard Charles Carpenter, tells of Sgt. John Carpenter's brother, Benjamin, was a Sgt in French and Indian War and was in the War of 1812. John enlisted for three years in 1777 in Col. Nathan Gist's 12th Regiment of the Virginia Continental Line, in the company commanded by Captain Samuel Lapsly, as a Private, (Pens Allp # S3581). John was in the Battles of Monmouth, Stony Point, and Charlestown, South Carolina, where he was taken prisoner May 12, 1780. He received a pension for his services, and in 1784 was granted 400 acres of land in Kentucky for his services in the Continental Line. He is listed on the census of Amherst County, Virginia in 1783 & 1785, he was a witness to a deed from his father Thomas to his brothers James & George Carpenter on Aug. 11, 1792. John removed to Knox County Kentucky where he was living in 1821, and then removed to Monroe County, Indiana, "for care and protection of his children."

The migration trail from the Great Valley of western</p></p><p><p> Virginia dipped into the northeast corner of Tennesee, then</p></p><p><p> northwesterly through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky.</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p> 3) John Carpenter was not found in Greene TN after 1787,</p></p><p> indicating that he went somewhere else after the marriage.</p>
