In 1717, Surry County, Virginia, John's will was probated. John came to America as a baby. He grew up on the James River, Charles City, Virginia.

Participated in Bacon's Rebellion with his father in 1676.

In 1683 he bought land with Peter Wycke in Parish of Westover. John is a common ancestor of Larry Jones/Bess Chancellor Jones.

There were about 10 Lanier residences on the U.S. census records as of 1790. This had increased to around 18 households by 1800. This number doubled by 1810. This number almost doubled again by 1830. By 1860 there were over 360 Lanier households on the U.S. census.

Today there are over 10,000 residences in the U.S. and only around 500 households in France which was the orginal home of the Laniers. The number of Laniers in Great Britain has dwindled to less than 10.

Only one Lanier lives in South Africa.

The known children were Bird Thomas, Lemuel of Surry, Robert and Benjamin. His widow Elizabeth Lanier had married Thomas Clare of Southwark Parish. In a deed of 1730, Thomas Clare and Elizabeth his wife deeded land to Robert lanier, son of said Elizabeth, and in default of any heirs of Robert Lanier, to descend to his brother Benjamin (D.B. 8, Vol 1, pt. 1, 1730-38, p. 28).

Lived in Surry Co, VA. He was taken into custody by the Surry Co. sheriff for failing to appear as a grandjuryman -- maybe he was just too busy.

Elizabeth Bird was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Bird and the granddaughter of William Bird and Hannah Grendon of Martins Brandon, Charles City Co, VA. Elizabeth inherited property from her father. After John died, the widow Elizabeth married Thomas Clare of Surry Co, VA. In her will, she deeds land to her sons Robert Lanier and Benjamin Lanier.

With the Court Order Book of Surry missing for 1720 - 1728, we will probably never know any more about John's children. The known children were Bird Thomas, Lemuel of Surry, Robert and Benjamin. Lemuel Lanier (1707 Surry, VA-3/23/1786 Burke, GA) married Hannah Peters (1710-1786), daughter of Thompson M Peters (1690–1745) in Surry Co., VA in 1732 and they had the following children: Thomas Lanier (1733-1787); Elizabeth Lanier (1735-1809); John Lanier (1738-1809); Lemuel Lanier (BIRTH 1742 Albemarle Parish, Surry, Virginia; DEATH 1797 Screven, Georgia); Benjamin Lanier (1744-1829) and Mary Lanier (1750-____).


Lemuel Lanier (1742-1797) married Nancy (1743–1817), on January 27, 1778, he was commissioned Sherriff of Burke County, Georgia when that county was created, and he and Nancy had the following children: ELIZABETH LANIER (TANNER) (1770–1809); Lemuel LANIER (1775–___); Hester LANIER (Bird) (1782–____) and Ida LANIER (1785-____).
Benjamin (BORN 31 MAY 1744 Albemarle Parish, Surry, Virginia; DEATH 1829 Jackson, Rankin, Mississippi) in 1770 in Screven, Georgia married Ealiff Hillery (1744–1802) and had a son John Hillary Lanier (1780–1870). Benjamin then in 1802 in Screven, Georgia married Elizabeth Wilson.

In 1726 in Surry County, Va he married Mary Madison (BIRTH 1711 Essex, VA; DEATH 1732 in Georgia) and they had the following children: Lemuel Lanier (1722–1770); Thomas Lanier (1724–1730); Bird Lanier (1727–1780); John Robert Lanier (1731–1793); Benjamin Lanier (1732–1817); Frederick Lanier (1745–1747); Jesse Lanier (1749–1750); Elizabeth Lanier (1751–1752); Robert Lanier (1754–1755); Sarah Lanier (1756–1757); Nicholas Lanier (1760–1761) and Allen Lanier (1763–1764).

  • Bird Thomas Lanier, born about 1703, in Surry Co, VA.; there he married Madison or Madderson in 1726. See his page. The couple owned property and lived in Brunswick Co, VA (which became Lunenburg Co. while they were living there) then Granville Co, VA. In 1734, Bird Thomas Lanier was appointed by Brunswick Co. court to serve as overseer for a new road to Shining Creek. See the assorted records. He was made Constable. On 1/2/1737 got a land warrant for 312 acres on south side of Great Creek in Brunswick Co.; sold this land in 1739. In 1751 the family moved to Duplin Co, NC where they were joined brother Lemuel, his family, and several sons of their brother Benjamin Lanier. Bird Thomas Lanier is credited with being one of the early settlers of Georgia. Lemuel went into Screven Co, GA., in 1756. the children of Bird Thomas and Mary Lanier were: Benjamin Lanier and maybe Bird Lanier, Lemuel Lanier, John Lanier (records lost).   • Lemuel Lanier, born about 1707 in Surry Co, VA. There he married, in 1732, Hannah Peters, the daughter of Thomas Peters who gave the couple 200 acres of land. Lemuel was overseer at Westover, the great plantation of William Byrd. In 1750 he and Hannah moved their family to Duplin Co, NC to join Bird Thomas Lanier. Lemuel Lanier acquired a good deal of land in Duplin Co. In 1756, Lemuel and Hannah moved to Screven Co, GA where they are listed as some of the earliest settlers. Their children were: Thomas Lanier, Elizabeth Lanier, John Lanier (b. 1738 in Surry Co, VA; m. Sarah Mills), Benjamin Lanier (b. 1744; served in Revolutionary War; d. after 1829)-- baptisms recorded in Albermarle Parish Register-- and Lemuel Lanier (b.1741; served in Revolutionary War; m. Nancy -? in GA; in 5/1784 was elected Justice of the Peace for Burke Co, GA; was first Register of Probate in the new county of Screven) and Mary Lanier, born in Duplin Co, NC.
