About John Pleasant Lewis, Sr.

DAR A 070016, NC Patriotic Service. Here is the last will and testament of John Lewis: "In the name of God, Amen. The fifth day of May, in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Seven, I, John Lewis, of the County of Randolph and State of North Carolina, being weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God: Therfore calling unto mind the mortality of the body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament.

In the manner and form following, vis., principally and first of all, I give and reccomend my soul into the Hands of God who gave it, and my body to the Earth, to be decently buried, according to the direction of my executors hereafter named, nothing doubting, but at the General Resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty Power of God. And as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to give me, I give and dispose of the same as followith, after my last debts is paid and funeral expense.

In primus, I give to my son John Lewis my home plantation, containing of two hundred acres of land, the same being in two surveys, the old survey contains one hundred and forty acres and the new survey contains sixty acres. Item, I give to my son David Lewis Five shillings. I give to my son Jacob Lewis Five shillings. All my moving effects to be sold and twelve months credit given to the purchasers. The money is to be divided in the following manner. vis, between my wife, my son, Richard, my daughter Rosannah West, my daughter Jean Campbell and my daughter Sarah Ruckman. But if either should decease, then the surviving Party to divide equally.

My wearing apparel not to be sold, but to be divided between John and Richard. Last of all I do constitute and appoint Richard Lewis, John Lewis and John Campbell my whole and sole executors of this my last Will and Testament. And I do hereby disallow revoke and disannul all and every other Testament, Will and legacies, requests and executors anyway before named, willed and bequeathed, satisfying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have here onto set my hand and seal, this day and year above written. Signed, sealed and published and pronounced to be the J. Lewis last will and testament in the presence of W.E. Knight, Jerimiah Field, and Thomas Lamb. Will was proved in open court by Thomas Lamb and ordered to be recorded."

John Lewis, son of David and Mary (Crawford) Lewis, born about 1720, possibly in Orange County, Virginia; died in Randolph County, North Carolina, 10 Jun 1802; married, possibly in Frederick County, Virginia, 16 October 1745, Priscilla Brooks, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Warren) Brooks, born 16 Oct 1725; died in Randolph County after 1802.

John Lewis had a lot of sons, big tough and many thought ruthless. It is said people were afraid to confront these men. They were also hard working and had many friends. There were stories handed down about the families and many can be found in books in the Randolph County history at the Ashboro Library. 2

Priscilla Brooks was born October 16, 1725 in Virginia, and died in Randolph County, North Carolina. She married John Lewis, Sr. 1745 in Frederick County, Virginia, son of David Lewis and Mary Crawford. He was born abt. 1720 in Orange County, Virginia, and died June 10, 1802 in Randolph County, North Carolina.
