Biography
John Pope "was born Oct. 23, 1675, after his parents were driven from Dartmouth by Philip's warriors, but where they found refuge has not been ascertained, perhaps at Plymouth or Sandwich, possibly in Rhode Island. Died Nov. 18, 1725, in Sandwich. His gravestone in Sandwich cemetery is probably the oldest one in America bearing the name of Pope. Married first, about 1699, Elizabeth, daughter of Elisha and Patience (Skiff) Bourne, of Sandwich, (b. June 26, 1679, died April 15, 1715). Married second, Oct. 3, 1717, Experience, daughter of Thomas and Experience (Hamblen) Jenkins, of Barnstable (born March 28, 1693, d. Dec. 1777)."[1]
"Seth Pope came back in 1699 and bought the town grist mill from John Dexter, the miller’s house and property along Grove Street and a large tract of land from Franklin Street (now Tupper Road) going far back over the hills toward Sagamore. On this land at what is now 110 Tupper Road he built a house for his eldest son, John (1675-1725) upon his marriage to Elizabeth Bourne. Seth put John in charge of the Dexter grist mill. In 1709, Seth’s younger son, Seth Jr. came to Sandwich and in 1710 married Hannah Bourne, the sister of his brother’s wife. Seth the Trader gave them the miller’s house he had bought at 10 Grove Street."[2]
