About John Reade, Sr.

1. John Reade. He was the son of 2. Thomas Reade and 3. Ann Allen

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Reade-106

John Read's ancestral pedigree has been corrupted by suppositions rather facts for many years. His parentage is disputed--If, however, he is the son of Thomas Read and Ann Allen (daughter of William Allen), John was born in Henrico County, Virginia, about 1700, being of legal age in 1721 to be named an executor of his father's LWT. Accordingly, he had three siblings: Johanna "Hannah" who married Samuel Butts; Thomas Jr; and William. It is William Read who is as likely as John to be Johanna Read Hill Allen's father. Robbie Smith, 07 May 2021.

John Reade was born about 1708 in Virigina. (Some sources say Henrico, and other sources say Bedford, Virginia which wasn't established until 1753). He married Mary Mallory in 1729.

John and Mary had the following known children:

  1. William
  2. Elizabeth
  3. Mary
  4. Hannah

His first wife died, and John remarried Elizabeth (last name unknown), who would later remarry to Evan Owen.

He died in March 1739 in Henrico, Virginia. Elizabeth Reade, his second wife was appointed administratrix of his estate.

READE OF ELIZABETH CITY AND BEDFORD

A Thomas Reade was residing in Elizabeth City about 1710 . It is certain that he was a member of the Reade family of York , for the family of his son John Reade in Henrico was evidently related to that family .

John Reade married first , Mary Mallory ; secondly , Elizabeth , who married secondly , Evan Owen . John Reade died in Henrico in 1739 and Elizabeth Reade was appointed administratrix with Col . John Bolling and Richard Randolph as her sureties . ( Bk . 1737 - 46 , p . 98 ) .

Mary Reade , daughter of John Reade , was under age in 1745 , for a chancery suit on her behalf was brought by her guardian , Francis Mallory , against Evan Owen and wife Elizabeth in that year . Richard Randolph was ordered to arbitrate the difference . ( Do . pp . 262 , 280 , 338 - 357 . )

Francis Mallory died and at an April court , 1753 , Mary Reade , orphan of John Reade , then made choice of Col . John Bolling as her guardian . ( Chesterfield , O . B . # 1 - 319 . ) At a May court in 1753 , a chancery suit brought by Hannah Reade , an infant , by Archibald Cary , her next friend , against William Reade ( her brother ) was dismissed ( Do . 341 ) . Previously in 1742 , Elizabeth Reade , daughter of John Reade , deceased , had also made choice of Francis Mallory as her guardian . ( Elizabeth City O . B . 1731 47 , p . 306 ) . Francis Mallory was her uncle , for in his will probated July 18 , 1744 , he gave his " cousin " ( niece ) £ 15 , providing she comes to age of 21 or marries ( D . W . 1737 - 49 ) .

If Francis Mallory , an uncle , was chosen guardian by Mary and Hannah Reade , what kin were the other guardians , arbitrators and " next friends ? " .

Col . John Bolling ( 1700 - 1757 ) , the first guardian of Mary Reade , was related by marriage . His first wife , Elizabeth Lewis , was a granddaughter of Mildred Reade , sister of Francis Reade and daughter of Colonel George Reade of York .

Archibald Cary , " next friend " for Hannah Reade , was a grand son of Henry Cary and his wife Judith Lockey , to whom Benjamin Reade gave a legacy . Archibald Cary ' s mother was Sarah Schlater , aunt of Mary Schlater who married Samuel Reade of

Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Reade-691

Parents were Thomas Reade (abt. 1690 - 1721) & Anne (Allen) Reade (abt. 1694)

Biography

Thomas was born about 1690. He was the son of Francis Reade and Ann Beale. He passed away in 1721.[1]

Will

Thomas Reade's will dated October 18, 1721 and recorded December 20, 1721, presented by Anne Reade, with sureties William Allen and John Cook. The will names sons, John, Thomas, William, his beloved wife, daughter Hannah. Minor sons Thomas and William were to be placed under the care of their uncle, William Allen. [1] He also mentions his slave Tony, to be sold in order to pay a debt to the Williams.[2]

Unconfirmed parents

There is not a definitive paper trail showing that Thomas Reade of Elizabeth City and Bedford is the son of Thomas Reade and Anne (granddaughter of Alice Beale). (While some genealogies do not include Thomas among the sons, he is mentioned in the will of his great grandmother Alice Beale). The will and transactions of Thomas' son John show a close relationship with this family. Please see the discussion in "Reade of Bedford and Elizabeth City," by John Bennett Boodie for the evidence showing Thomas is the son of Francis. [2]
