Jonas Wood "of Oram", son of Edmund Wood & Martha Lome, baptized 18 Sept 1614 Halifax, Yorkshire, England. His father Edmund Wood was was one of the early emigrants to New England colony.[1]

Jonas Wood was living at Springfield MA in 1636, at Wethersfield CT in 1637, Stamford CT in 1641, all with his father Edmund, and from there went to Hempstead Long Island. In 1644, he was one of the patentees of Hempstead. (Hoff notes that Jonas Wood and John Ogden were the only two of Hempstead's five patentees on Stamford records.) He was on the list of proprietors of Hempstead in 1647.

Jonas "Oram" died 12 June 1689. His will dated 20 Feb 1688/9 proved 15 Apr 1692 at Brookhaven had bequests to his son Jonas, son Isaac Platt, daug Elizabeth, son Epenetus Platt, daug Phebe, son John Wood. [2][3][4]

He was called 'Jonas Wood Oram' to distinguish him from his supposed cousin Jonas Wood Halifax. [5]

"It is a difficult problem to determine the identity of the wives of this Jonas and of his son Jonas and of his supposed cousin Jonas "Halifax". ... to accept, tentatively, the conclusion that Jonas "Oram" married a daughter of John Strickland ... he may have married a second wife, may have married a widow Smith, mother of James."[6]

Children:

  • Jonas jr born about 1643
  • Elizabeth married 15 Sep 1665 to Isaac Platt
  • Phebe married Mar 1667 to Epenetus Platt
  • John marr and had children recorded at Huntington

disputed marriage

"The statement in "Ancestors of Jacob Shaffer and his wife Cordelia Hunt" (by Mrs Josephine C. Frost, 1927) page 78 that Jonas "Oram" married Elizabeth Conkling is scarcely worth consideration for she was baptized 18 Mar 1648/9 as a child and was a generation too late to be mother of the children of Jonas "Oram."

Elizabeth Conkling was apparently of proper age to be wife of Jonas Wood, the son of Jonas "Oram" Wood.[7]

Will

According to his will, dated Feb. 10, 1689, Jonas "Owram" Wood had 4 children:Jonas Jr., John, Phebe, and Elizabeth. They are listed on pg. 54 (Image 91). Daughters Phebe & Elizabeth both married men with the last name of Platt.
