Predecessor: Gustav III Successor: Charles XIII

Succeeded his father as king at the age of 13. Married at 18. Violent and obstinate in his reign and alienated his country's most faithful supporters. By 1809 it was obvious that he was insane, and after being dethroned, he and his whole family were transported to Germany. A few months later his marriage ended in divorce, and he settled in Switzerland. After his death, his body was returned to Sweden.

One report shows him serving under Napoleon and being a lieutenant in the Prussian army.
