About Lt. James Ball
Not the same as Sgt James Ball (son of James)
James became a Lieutenant of the Continental Line, in the American Revolution. Evidence of this is found in "Virginia Soldiers of 1776" by Louis A. Burgess:
"LIEUT. JAMES BALL, Executive Dept., Apr. 116, 1833. The heirs of James Ball are allowed Land Bounty for his services as a Lieutenant in the continental Line for 3 yrs., If not heretofore drawn. (Signed) John Floyd, Governor." AND "FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA, "December Court, Mar. 14, 1885. It was ordered to be certified that James Ball, who is said to have been an officer in the Revolutionary War, died about the year 1783; that Moses Ball, of Fairfax County, was his elder brother and heir; that Moses Ball died in 1792, testate, intestate as to the estate of his brother James Ball.....Copy teste, F. W. Richardson, Clerk." Source: "The Ball Family of Southwest Virginia" by Palmer R. Ball (1933) pg 4
The Find A Grave Memorial of James' mother lists Lt. James Ball's date of birth as 1758, death year as 1793. The following sites mention James Ball b. c. 1755 - 1758, d. 1793 - son of Moses Ball, Sr. & Ann Nancy Brashears. Same or different person? Help!
*http://www.phillipsdnaproject.com/forum/19-military-records/1208-ca... – talks about a court case related to Moses Ball, mentions Lt. James Ball who was b. 1755 & d. circa 1793 (this needs closer examination which I am in the process of, and will be glad for any help anyone can give)!

Written genealogy records done by my father-in-law in the 1970's indicate that James was a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War and received land grants for this service. Researcher Michael Ferguson (Michael@Ferguson.org) posted: At...court 14 March, 1835 it was ordered to be certified that James Ball, who is said to have been an officer in the Rev. War, died about the year 1783. That Moses Ball of Fairfax County was his elder brother and heir.
