Notes:

  • George Ball, rank not stated, served in the Revolutionary War as a member of  Captain John Blvis Company, 9th Virginia Regiment, commanded by Thomas Fleming, Esq. His name first appeared on a payroll for November and December 1776. From the War Department, Washington, D.C. - see documents attached.
  • Researcher Wilma Brown says that George and Elizabeth (Tunnell) Ball are actually buried on their old property in New Garden, Russell Co VA and the new markers in Ewing need to be moved to New Garden VA. I don't know if this is correct information---just use as possible food for thought!
  • ALT death date from merge: 3/19/1835

George, Sr. & Elizabeth (Tunnel) Ball married in 1768. Records in "Virginia Soldiers of 1776, by Louis Burgess" indicates that George Sr. & Elizabeth had 12 children. At some point in time (unknown to me), George Sr. moved from near Abingdon, Washington Co., VA to New Garden, Russell Co., VA. (source: research of my father-in-law, William Henry "Bill" Ball).

Researcher John Crunk gives different birth and death dates for George: b. 1743, d. December 24, 1825. I have not found proof showing which is correct.

The Find A Grave Memorial of George's mother lists his place of birth as Alexandria, Fairfax Co., VA - again, I can't confirm or deny this... Researcher Wilma Brown says that George and Elizabeth (Tunnell) Ball are actually buried on their property in New Garden, Russell Co VA. She says the newer markers in Ewing need to be moved to New Garden VA.

George's grave is marked by one large stone surrounded by smaller stones. (must be the description of the marker in New Garden VA)

FAQ volunteer, 11 Jul 2011: I have visited this Cemetery twice and looked at the graves in detail. There are a couple graves marked with field stone and a couple graves covered with large, hewn pieces of limestone rock that are not identified. Without additional information the grave cannot be located. (Phil Cheek)
