About Lt. William Coolbaugh

Served as a private under Capt. Samuel Growendyck, 3rd Regiment, Hunterdon Militia, Jan 20 - 28, 1777; private under Capt Daniel Bray from Kingwood, second regiment Hunterdon Militia; private under Capt Cornelius Johnson, state troops, enlisted from Capt. Bray's company July 11, 1780 to serve until January 1, 1781. This is the Regiment that is said to have secured the banks of the Delaware from Easton down to find boats to convey Washington and his men accross the river from New Hope, to Coryell's Ferry, (Lambertsville), the night he fell on the Hessians at Trenton.

He was promoted to Sergeant. Served at Minnisink, Sussex Co. NJ. 13 Apr 1792, he was elected Ensign, 2nd Company, 1nd Battalion, Luzerne County Militia.

He is spoken of as Lieut. William Coolbaugh in the records of the old church in Wysox. He married Susannah Schoonmaker, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (DePuy), sister of his brother Moses' wife.
William Coolbaugh probably came from Shawnee to Wysox with his brother in 1789. He was the first settler at Myersburg, about 1806, later selling his property to Amos MIx about 1814, and removed to Barrington, Yates County, Ny.

While at Wysox, Mr. Coolbaugh, like his brother Moses, he took a prominent part in community affairs. Both he and his wife were charteer members of the old Presbyterian church of the place, 1791. In 1795 four ruling Elders were chosen by the church, of whom he was one. He was constable of Wysox Township in 1799. From 1798 to 1802 he was supervisor; in 1803 he was one of the overseers of the poor and from 1796-99 was one of the fence viewers. 13 Apr 1792, he was elected Ensign, 2nd Company, 1nd Battalion, Luzerne County Militia.

For a second wife, he married Mercy Buxton, widow of Jonas Smith of North Towanda."
