About Marie-Elise Godard
Marie-Elise Juhan was the daughter of Jean Jacques Juhan and wife Marie Payzant. She was born in Falmouth Nova Scotia about 1765 or 1766. The name is found both with and without the hyphen between Marie and Elise.She died in Charleston, South Carolina on June 27, 1843, and was buried in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Charleston.
As a child, Marie-Elise lived in Nova Scotia, Boston, Haiti, Philadelphia, and Charleston, South Carolina. She married Rene Godard, French by birth, but a long-time citizen of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1795. They had two daughters, Jane and Franciarde. The Godards became a prominent and wealthy family in Charleston.
In a letter dated December 4, 1804 to her uncle, the Rev. John Payzant, of LIverpool, Nova Scotia, Marie-Elise wrote that her mother and two of her brothers died in the French West Indies, and that her father was now dead. Of her surviving two brothers, one was in Virginia and one was in South Carolina.
