Maria Teresa Antonietta Rafael de Borbón, Infanta de España was born on 11 June 1726 at Madrid, Spain. (1) She was the daughter of Felipe V de Borbón, Rey de España and Isabella Elizabeth Farnese. Biography

María Teresa Antonia Rafaela de Borbón at La Granja Palace, she was one of seven children of King Philip V of Spain, and Elisabeth Farnese, and thus an Infanta of Spain (infanta de España) by birth.

As the daughter of the King of Spain, she was granted the style of address of Royal Highness.

Prior to the marriage, the Spanish and French royal courts had been on poor terms: the Spanish had been greatly insulted by the French, when the engagement between Louis XV of France and Infanta Mariana Victoria of Spain, elder sister of Maria Teresa, had been broken off in 1725. (Louis had instead married Marie Leszczyńska, and by her fathered the Dauphin, Louis-Ferdinand)

Marriage

The marriage was thus partially intended to heal the division between the French and Spanish branches of the Bourbon family. Accordingly, Maria Teresa was married by proxy at Madrid on 18 December 1744 before her departure for France where, on 23 February 1745, she married Louis-Ferdinand. Her name was then modified to Marie Thérèse Raphaëlle.

On 24 February, one of many a lavish balls was held at Versailles; it was attended by the King, the Queen, Madame Henriette, Madame Adélaïde; the Duchess of Chartres[1]; the Dowager Princess of Conti (mother of Madame de Chartres); Duchess of Modena (first cousin of Madame de Conti); Mademoiselle (sister of Madame de Conti) and Mesdemoiselles de Sens and de La Roche-sur-Yon[2].

As the Dauphine of France, she was the highest ranking female in the kingdom after Queen Marie Leszczyńska.

She was the first Dauphine of France since 1712 when Princess Maria Adelaide of Savoy died at Versailles during an outbreak of an epidemy which killed many members of the royal family.

The marriage did not get off on a good start as it was not consummated on the first night. This was a major embarrassment to Marie, which undermined her position at court. Although she was described as beautiful, of a dignified bearing and pious, some negative remarks were made because of her red hair. Very shy, and not interested in games, Marie Thérèse Raphaëlle preferred to remain most of the time in her apartments. These apartments, officially called appartement de la Dauphine de France were located on the ground floor of the Palace of Versailles, under the petit appartement de la reine, and overlooked the parterre du Midi[3] and the Orangerie.

Finally, the marriage was consummated in September 1745, putting an end to all the gossip. The couple became very close and devoted to each other, spending most of their time together. This was in strong contrast to the King, who had recently taken as his official mistress Madame de Pompadour. The favourite had been presented formally at court during the ball celebrating the marriage of the new couple. It was called the Ball of the Clipped Yew. The Dauphin and Dauphine disliked the royal mistress for the way she drew attention away from the Queen, Marie Leszczyńska. The Dauphine was also hostile to the King himself for not participating in Holy Communion and ignoring her.

On 19 July 1746, Marie Thérèse gave birth to a girl:

Three days later, on 22 July, Marie Thérèse Raphaëlle died. Her death caused an intense sorrow to the Dauphin, a sorrow which persisted into his second marriage. Louis XV had had to physically drag his son away from the death bed of his wife...[4]

Baptised Marie Thérèse, in honour of her mother, Madame Royale died at Versailles twenty-one months after her mother.

Both were buried at the Basilica of St Denis, the French royal necropolis near Paris.

In 1747, the widowed Dauphin married Maria Josepha of Saxony, the daughter of Augustus III of Poland, Prince-Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, and Maria Josepha of Austria, the daughter of Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor.

But the child, a girl, was not born until July 19, which exasperated the impatient Dauphin. The daughter, named Marie-Thérèse, died in April 1748. Her mother failed to recover from the childbirth and died three days later on July 22. Her death caused intense sorrow in the Dauphin, a sorrow which persisted even into his second marriage.
