About Mary #1 Chandler
DANIEL 6 CHANDLER (David* David* Joseph, 2 John? William 1 ) and Mercy Huntoon, Hardwick, Vt.
She was born 18 April, 1775: she d. 31 May, 1833, in Hardwick, leaving six sons and six daughters. They lived in Hanover, X. H., until their four oldest children were born, and until their two oldest were burnt up in the house they were building. Mrs. Chandler left the two oldest — Benjamin and Mary — in care of the carpenter who was finishing off their house, and took with her Rebecca and Daniel to a neighbor's to a quilting. Mr. Chandler was threshing in the barn. It is supposed that, while at play with the carpenter's shavings, the two children set the house on tire, in which they were consumed. At their funeral, the minister said, in the performance of his sacred duty, that " because these children had not been baptized, they were damned to all eternity and would burn in hell tire forever." Mrs. Chandler, being of a confiding, credulous nature, believed that, by her neglect, she had been thus the cause of their everlasting misery ; and hence her mind was ever after disturbed and unbalanced at intervals. Soon after this sad event the family removed to Hardwick, where he bought one hundred and twenty acres of the wilderness and cleared it up for a farm, about an eighth of a mile west of the spot where he and some of his family now lie buried. He died 17 Aug. 1828, aged 56.
