About Mary Sherwood

Many sources state that Mary, the wife of Hugh Sherwood, was the daughter of Dr. John Brooke and his wife Judith Winsmore, and a granddaughter of Thomas Brooke and Susan Forster of Whitchurch, Hampshire, England. However, information recently discovered by my cousins, Jerry Sherwood and Terry Linthicum, suggests that Dr. John Brooke (d. 1692/3) and his wife Judith (d. 1693), were not the parents of Mary Sherwood, and that this John Brooke was not the son of Thomas Brooke of Whitchurch, but rather a son of Michael Brooke (d. 1663/4).

Nevertheless, there is evidence to suggest that Mary, the wife of Hugh Sherwood, was a Brooke, and possibly the daughter of the John Brooke (b. 1605), who was, indeed, a son of Thomas Brooke & Susan Forster of Whitchurch. Her family probably came to Maryland with her uncle Robert Brooke (1602-1655), Find A Grave # 17908266 who brought a large group of people into Maryland in 1650. And a cousin has recently suggested to me that Mary may have been a daughter of Robert himself, and his second wife, Mary Mainwaring (1611-1663). Apparently they had a daughter named Mary, born 14 April 1642.

Mary married Hugh Sherwood (1632-1710) of Crooked Intention plantation, Talbot Co. Md.,
and they had seven children:
Daniel Sherwood (1668-1738, m. Mary Hopkins),
Philip Sherwood (d. 1717/8, m. Frances),
Hugh Sherwood (m. Elizabeth Skinner),
Francis Sherwood (d. 1737, m. Joanna),
Capt. John Sherwood (c.1678-?, m. Lucy Mann, 2nd. Elizabeth Pitt Berry, 3rd. Penelope Skillington),
Catherine (m. Ralph Rice), and
Margaret Sherwood (d. 1755, m. William Hambleton).

Since Mary's husband Hugh was a member of the Vestry of St. Michael's Church (now Christ Church, St. Michaels), I assume they would have been buried in the Church cemetery, but that is just an assumption.
