Disputed Origins
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Farrar-96
There is a persistent myth, perpetuated by those of Melton ancestry, that Mary Farrar Watkins married a Robert Melton. This confusion is caused by some family researcher that decided to morph the surname Farr into Farrar. The ostensible reason for this crime appears to be a desire on the part of the Melton's to obtain an Ancient Planters certificate.
There is absolutely no evidence or documentation of a marriage between Mary Farrar Watkins and Robert Melton.
It is claimed that Mary Farrar and Robert Melton married in 1730, however Mary Farrar and her husband Joseph Watkins had a daughter Mary Watkins who was born 1732, two years after the "marriage" of Mary Farr and Robert Melton.
An allied mistake is the conflation of Elizabeth O Farr who also married a Melton into Elizabeth Farrar. This one is easier to disprove because neither Thomas Farrar who married Katherine Perrin or his brother William Farrar III who married Priscilla Baugh had a daughter by name of Elizabeth. --- Notes - Event: Misc 1738 Had an illegitimate child while still a widow of Joseph Watkins

Notes - Re: Mary FARRAR & ?John or ?Robert MELTON Oct 14 2010
"Sorry but there is no Mary Farrar descended from Councillor William Farrar and his wife Cecily widow of Samuel Jordan, who married a Robert Melton. In fact there is a claim by the Melton's that she had a sister Elizabeth (O.) Farrar who married William James Melton, both claim that these girls were daughters of Thomas Farrar and Katherine Perrin, but for a number of reasons that is impossible ....."
Robert Melton (son of Richard Melton and Mary)255, 255, 255, 256 was born 1696 in Parish St Peters St Paul, New Kent, Virginia, USA/Saint Paul, Wise Co., VA256, and died 24 Apr 1759 in Orange, North Carolina, USA256.

- https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/farrar/2536/ Many researchers make the mistake of shoehorning Farrows, Farris and Farr's into the Farrar family, if they can carry it off, then they can join some social club like Ancient Planters. Some Farrows are indeed Farrar's, maybe some Farris are indeed Farrar's (but I've yet to see evidence of that), however most Farrows are actually Farrows, and not all Farrar's are Farrar's some are Farrows or Farr's.
