Mary Elliot is purported to have been a the daughter of John Elliot and a sister of Richard Elliot who married Capt. Ralph Stuart’s sister Mary Catherine Stuart. John Elliot was living near Ralph Stuart in 1787 when they were both shown on the land tax list in the district of Charles Cameron in Augusta County. (Sparacio, Ruth and Sam Sparacio. “Augusta County Land Books,” Virginia County Court Records. McLean, Virginia: Antient Press.) According to tradition, the Elliots came to America in 1736 from Ireland and Col. Richard was born aboard ship during the trip. John Elliott is supposed to have resided in Fincastle, Donegal County, North Ireland. Ralph's older sister, Mary, married Richard Elliott, brother of Ralph's wife Mary. Richard Elliott acted as attorney for Ralph Stewart and Isabella (Stuart) Barker, his brother James Stuart's widow, in subsequent land transactions. Richard Elliott was a witness at the marriage of Capt. Ralph Stewart to Mary Clay. Richard Elliott and his brother-in-law, Ralph Stewart were identified along with other surveyors who were responsible for the building of a road from Joseph Gregory’s to William Hamilton’s farm on the Monongahela. They were exempted from working on the road probably because of their militia duties.(Chalkey, Lyman. The Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia: 1745-1800. [Court Order Book XV, p. 327, May 17, 1775], pp. 178 and 180.)
