William Whitfield settled in Nansemond County, Virginia in the early part of the 18th Century, and then went into North Carolina to Chowan and Bertie Counties, North Carolina, he traveled to the United States on his own ship.

William is the son of Matthew (born 1666) who also immigrated from Lancaster, England, District of Lancashire, and Priscilla Lawrence Whitfield of Nansemond County, Virginia. Priscilla is the daughter of John and Mary Lawrence of Virginia.

William Whitfield and Elizabeth Goodman of Gates County, North Carolina, were married 1n 1713 in Chowan County. They had eleven children.
