In Germany, in 1918 after his father succumbed to the Spanish flu pandemic and he himsel recovered, Max at age16, took ocer his father's busines, cattle dealing and butcher, out of the "Scheune", the barn that was part of the ground level of the two story home. Mother Merle was still alive and half sister Malchen was at home too.
The Hebrew name of Max KATZ is Mordechai, named thus after his maternal great grandfather.
On the Night of Broken Glass Nov. 9-10, 1938 Max was arrested by the nazis ( on the pretex of " cruelty to animals) he then was taken to Buchenwald concentraion camp, along with a dozen more residents of Guxhagen (where he lived) . After 6 terrible weeks in the camp he mannaged to get out. He then decided to leave Germany for ever. It took about 6 months of preparations and early in 1939 he left with his wife and two daughers for Israel. He never went back and survived the Holocaust.
