About Moses ben Shaul Katzenellenbogen

Moses Katzenellenbogen 1670 - 1733.

He was the son of Rabbi Saul Katzenellenbogen and Yente (nee Shor) daughter of Rabbi Jacob Shor. Moses was a Polish rabbi and author, born at Pinczow in 1670, when his father was fifty three years old, and died at Furth in 1733. He was the grandson of Moses Katzenellenbogen, rabbi of Kohlm.

At the age of twenty four in 1694, he became A.B.D. Podhajce. In 1699 he was arrested by the town's citizens on false charges and accusations, but managed to escape and became A.B.D. of Schwabach that same year.

He became known as the "Schwabacher Rabbiner" and, in 1707 wrote an approbation there to Ir Binyamin Sheni by Benjamin Ze'ev, son of Samuel Darshan, published in Furth 1712.

Other approbations were to:

  • Torat Yosef by Joseph, son of Moses Gunzberg of Frankfurt, written in 1715, published Wilmersdorf 1715.
  • Wilmersdorf Mishnayot Edition, written 1715.
  • Ohalei Yehunda by Judah Aryey, son of Zvi Hirsch, written in 1731, published Offenbach 1733.
  • Olat Aharon by Aron Zelig, son of Joel Feiwel of Ostrog, written in 1731 , published Offenbach in 1733.
  • Torat Adam by the RaMBaN, written in 1732.

He was the author of:

1. Chidushei Halachot, unpublished.

2. Responsa in manuscript housed in the Bodlein Library at Oxford.

He married Jached (Leah), daughter of Eliezer (Leser Charif) Heilprin (Heilbronn) of Miedzyrzec and Furth. He was progenitor of a large family through three of his sons. (see below Chapter 11 - Branch A).
