notes

From Goodale/Goodell Forbears, pg. 19:

"ISAAC [I] died at an early age, in the autumn of 1679 (prior to his father, ROBERT's, death). His death was probably sudden, as he left no will, dying intestate [his infant unnamed son died in the same week]. His widow, Patience and his brother-in-law, Captain John Pease were appointed to administer his estate. It was not until many years later that the estate was finally settled by his eldest son, ISAAC [II] [-who was the age of 9 when his father died], who had taken the place of Captain Pease."

"The inventory of the estate is given [see my notes for Isaac, this family tree], reflecting the fact that he had already given away many acres to his children prior to his death."

"PATIENCE, relict of ISAAC GOODALE, and administratrix of his estate, desiring a settlement of the estate, and the court understanding there are five children, ordered 30: 9m [Sept]: 1680, that when the debts are paid the whole estate to remain in the widow's hand for the bringing up of the children, and to pay to the eldest son 12 L. and the rest of the children 6 L. each when they come of age or marriage, the rest of the estate bound for the sole use of the widow, the land to stand bound for security." Salem Quarterly Court Records, vol .6, leaf 12.

Citation dated June 12, 1693, to "PATIENCE Stimpson, alias GOODALE, administratrix on the estate of ISAAC [I] GOODALE, to give an account of her administration on which it appears that she hath not completed the same, and whereas John Pease who was joined with her in the administration is dead, administration is granted to ISAAC [II] GOODALE, the eldest son of the deceased." Essex County Probate Records, vol. 303, page 183.

"Bond of PATIENCE (her mark) Stimpson and ISAAC (his mark) [II] GOODALE, both of Salem, with John How and SAMUEL (his mark) ABBY, of Salem and Topsfield, as sureties, in the sum of 200 L, for administration on the estate ISAAC GOODALE of Salem. Signed and sealed June 12, 1693." Witness: Stephen Sewell, Reg., Thomas Flint. Essex County Probate Files, Docket 11,115.

From: "History of the Town of Danvers; From its Early Settlement to the year 1848," JW Hanson, 1848, pg. 49:
"The following list of the first payers of rates in the village parish in the year 1982 may shed some light on the settlement of the town: "Isaac Goodell's widow, 10 shillings."

On page 36 of Eaton's 'History of Reading Mass' it says...

"Widdow (James) Stimson appearing before the Selectmen, complayning to them that her house is not habitable, by reasons of the stoop falling down, --- her husband, Dr. James had recently deceased; --- her son James joined in her complaynt, and together prayed for aid in securing their corne and provision. Jeremiah Pike was appointed to assist the son in removing the corne and provisions to the house of Sergt John Parker, and to instruct and oversee the said James, that he doth improve his time in carefull tending of the cattell, and providing fire wood convenient, that his mother may not suffer; also to advise and order him in managing his affairs, that he makes neither strip nor waste of his father's estate, until there is further order taken and a settlement of the estate of the Court." Dated Dec 1690

Eaton goes on to say...

"This falling house, the late residence of Dr. James Stimpson, then recently deceased, stood on Cowdrey's Hill; and Sergt John Parker lived where M. F. Leslie resided in 1868."
