About Dr. James Stimpson

James was the son of John and Susanna (Phillips) Stimsen/Stinson/Stimson

He married Naomi Leffingwell, daughter of Michael and Isabel (Cox) Leffingwell, on 18 Apr 1661 at Reading, Middlesex, MA Bay - parents of John, Abigail (1663-1667), Naomi, Ruth, Thomas (1666-1666), Dr. James II, a second Thomas, a second Abigail, Jonathan, David, Elizabeth, Mary (1677-1677), a second Mary, Solomon and Benjamin

I believe that this family is related to John Stimson that was from New Castle, North Umberland, England. [1]

Could this be a Quaker family??? Not unless they changed from Church of England, Episcopalian, then returned to the Episcopalian faith again. Have found no evidence of The Friend's / Quaker of any of the linage. All birth, marriages is with The Church of England.

Marriage

The marriage of Naomy Leppingwell to James Stevenson (also recorded as Naomi Leapinwell and James Stimson) was recorded at Reading, Massachusetts, on 18 April 1661.[2]

Some of the records above reference a Mary Leffingwell. It is not clear to me if Naomi and Mary are the same person or if James married a sister of Naomi at some point. James had a child named Ebenezer Stimson that I know of with Patience Cook.

Let me start by sharing what I have on your Generation 3: I have found no evidence of Dr. James Stim(p)son's birth in MA except for other unreferenced genealogies. If you have a source for this please share. I believe that James died about 1690 in South Reading, MA. I base this on the fact that by 1691 his wife was to referred as 'Widow Stimson' By the way this would have been James second wife, Patience Cooke, who he married sometime before 1684.

On page 36 of Eaton's 'History of Reading Mass' it says... "Widdow (James) Stimson appearing before the Selectmen, complayning to them that her house is not habitable, by reasons of the stoop falling down, --- her husband, Dr. James had recently deceased; --- her son James joined in her complaynt, and together prayed for aid in securing their corne and provision. Jeremiah Pike was appointed to assist the son in removing the corne and provisions to the house of Sergt John Parker, and to instruct and oversee the said James, that he doth improve his time in carefull tending of the cattell, and providing fire wood convenient, that his mother may not suffer; also to advise and order him in managing his affairs, that he makes neither strip nor waste of his father's estate, until there is further order taken and a settlement of the estate of the Court." Dated Dec 1690

Eaton goes on to say... "This falling house, the late residence of Dr. James Stimpson, then recently deceased, stood on Cowdrey's Hill; and Sergt John Parker lived where M. F. Leslie resided in 1868."

Now let me address Dr. James Stim(p)son's wives. It is my belief that Naomi and Mary Leffingwell are the same person. Naomi died March 28, 1681 from Reading Vital Records. The book "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" indicated James Stimson married Patience Cooke before 1684 and that she was his second wife (pages 209 and 711). I am open to other possibilities but I have never seen any real evidence that Mary and Naomi Leffingwell were anything other than two different names for the same person.

From http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.stimson/106.2.2.2/mb.ashx

'One of the early proprietors of Watertown was John Simson, who was buried there 10 June 1643, leaving two sons, John and Jonathan, three daughters (born at Watertown 1634-1642/3), and a widow, Susanna, whom George1 Parkhurst soon married. By this union he acquired all the real estate of the deceased, except a small parcel alienated by the widow and 6 acres of upland, which she transferred to William Page on 9 Nov. 1643, acknowledging the deed on 28 Nov. of the same year. As Parkhurst sold 2 acres of the Simson land on 16 Nov. 1644, the marriage took place between these dates. Probably he soon removed from Watertown, as he was of Boston on 4 Oct. 1645 ..."
