About Pedro Aunario

A Filipino writer in Spanish, Aunario was the editor of La Vanguardia, and during the term of Governor-General Francis B. Harrison, a representative for the mountain province. He resigned from the legistrature in 1923.

Career - His career in journalism started when he was on the editorial board of La Patria while studying at the Ateneo de Manila. He then worked for La Fraternidad, La Democracia, and El Ranacimiento. He also contributed his works in the magazines Renacimiento Filipino, Cultura Filipina, Philippine Review, The Citizen and other journals. He graduated his masters in journalism at the age of 19.

He was considered the "FATHER OF FILIPINO JOURNALISM".

Award - He earned an honorable mention from the Premio Zobel in 1934 for his collection of journalistic essays En el Yunque Contidiano (On the Anvil of Existence).

He donated his books and works to the Filipino Heritage Museum. One of the streets in University of the Philippines, Diliman was named after him.

He's recognized as one of the famous people in jounalism. He belongs to the Elite Society, among his closest friends were Eugenio Lopez Sr., President Manuel Quezon, and The Zobel's.


Pedro Aunario, a writer and editor of La Vanguardia, won the 1934 Premio Zobel for his work En el Yunque Cotidiano. He was appointed as representative for the Mountain Province in 1916, and would serve until his resignation in 1923. He was a speaker during the 1930 First Independence Congress ("Our Neighbors in the Far East"). He was also a member of the 1919 Philippine Independence Mission to the US, which was headed by then Senate President Manuel L. Quezon.
