The following information was found on Family Search.org: Peter Edmund Van Orden was born 27 January 1830 at Cayuga County, New York, the son of William and Julia Ann Haight of New York State. William Van Orden had built a house on Green Point on the Hudson. They came to Utah in 1850. Peter married Martha Ann Knight (daughter of Joseph Knight, Jr. and Betsy Covert) on 5 November 1851. They were given land by the Church at Kaysville, Utah, and lived in a covered wagon which was removed from its running gears and placed on the ground, then banked up with sod.

Homestead law was first used in the settlement of Lewiston in 1869. A land office was established making it possible for a person with five years residency to own his own land. Everett C. Van Orden, who had been one of the early settlers of Franklin, Idaho, described Cache Valley to his brother Peter E. Van Orden and his friends J.M. Bernhisel and Robert Wall in his home in Kaysville, Utah. Land hungry and eager to see new country, the three young men traveled northward reaching Richmond 3 July 1870. Being directed northward by the people of that town they rode to Mink Creek, then southwest over the sites of Riverdale and Preston and southward to a site that attracted them. Here they stopped their search, for they had found the land they desired. Peter said, "Here we will take up four quarter sections to make our homes."

So four quarter sections of land were measured out. The fourth section was for Everett C. Van Orden. They entered their claims in the land office in Salt Lake City and these four sections became the center and beginning of the town of Lewiston. In the fall of 1870 these four men returned to their homesteads. Peter and Everett Van Orden secured lumber from the sawmill above Franklin, Idaho, and Peter and his family spent the winter in their newly constructed home.

Married: 25 November 1851 (1) Martha Ann Knight, with whom he had five children (1) Mary Elizabeth,1852-1926, m Hyrum Bair1850-1926. (2) Peter Edmund, 1856-1926, m Laura Christina Bastian, 1862-1925. (3) Julia Ann, 1857-1920, m Erastus Snow Carpenter, 1845-1918. (4) Ellen, 1859-1883. They were divorced and she was sealed to Martin Walderfin Mills at the Salt Lake Endowment House in 1867. Martha later married Anson Perry Winsor in 1880.

Peter later married: 10 October 1870 (2) Sarah Ellen McFerson, with whom he had seven children. (1) William Runnels,1871-1951. (2) David Horton, 1873-1963, m Martha Waddoups, 1987-1958. (3) Sarah Ann, 1876-1950. (4) Charlotte Amelia, 1878-1948. (5) Mariam, 1860-1968. (6) Keturah, 1883-1897. (7) Abber McFerson, 1885-1957, m Agnes McKnight, 1890-1976.

The following is from Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah: Peter Edmund Van Orden, Sr., was the son of William Van Orden and Julia Ann Haight, of New York state. Born January 27, 1830, in Cayuga county, New York. Came to Utah in 1850.

Married: Sarah E. McFerson October 10, 1870, Salt Lake City (daughter of Dimon McFerson and Mary Ann Neas of Kaysville, Utah pioneers, October, 1853, Isaac Allred company). She was born October 20, 1846, died July 20, 1912.

David H. born December 31, 1873, married Martha Waddoups;

Sarah Ann born February 5, 1876;

Charlotte A. born September 29, 1878, married Nephi N. Rogers;

Member Nauvoo Legion; worked on Nauvoo Temple; helped to build Winter Quarters; assisted in bringing immigrants to Utah 1856; first settler at Lewiston. Died September 25, 1911.
