About Phineas Howe Richards

Phineas Howe Richards (1788 - 1874), an early leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was born 15 November 1788 at Framingham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; he died at the age of 86 on 25 November 1874 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah Territory, and was buried at Salt Lake City Cemetery. A son of Joseph Richards (1762 - 1840) and Rhoda Howe (1762 - 1838), he married Wealthy Dewey (1786 - 1874), daughter of Samuel Dewey and Milley McKee/McKeeard, in 1818 at Richmond, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He had six additional plural wives.

Richards served as sergeant major during the War of 1812. He was appointed Coroner of Berkshire County in 1825. Joined the Church of the Latter-day Saints in 1837. He was a member of high councils at Kirtland, Nauvoo, Winter Quarters and Salt Lake City. He also served as a member of the Nauvoo City Council and the 1st Utah territorial legislature, where he also was the chaplain. In 1844, Richards published an appeal to the citizens of Massachusetts asking them to take action on the matter of the wrongs Missouri had inflicted upon the Latter-day Saints.
