About Putnam Hadley Burk

The extended Burk(e) family once owned and or lived at at least two properties in the West side of Hartland, known as Jenneville. Many relatives were elsewhere in Windsor County. One was at the current 39-41 Jenne Rd.. The other, "Burk's Stand" was lower down on the Jenneville Road, the brick house where the Cady Brook joins Lull's brook. ~• from MMvB who started living on the Jenne Road in the year 2000 on 20 acres that was part of the John Ballou property (formerly Jenne, formerly occupied but not owned by Cyrus Burk, son of Jacob Putnam Burk). It is not clear whether Jacob Putnam ever lived' on Jenne Road'

A Frank Burk later lived on nearby Morrison Road in 1914 per the Flower history of Hartland Rev. War soldiers
According to Clyde Jenne, son of Albert and Ruth (Ballou), the Burk farm was purchased in the 1860s from the Burks who had recently been burnt out of their home on Jenne road. The Jenne and Burk farms abutted each other.

Many Burks are buried in the Jenneville cemetery at the intersection of Best Road and Jenneville Rd.

The subject of this profile has a stone that gives him the name Putnam H. Burk but in The Burke and Alvord memorial : a genealogical account of the descendants of Richard Burke of Sudbury, Mass. The Burke memorial, his name is listed as Jacob Putnam Hadley Burk

"In early days, Hartland was always reporting the laying out of roads, and there were, at least three named roads – the “Old Post Road” on the Connecticut River, of which there is a map; the “County Road,” from Windsor to Woodstock over the hills and passing through Fieldsville, and the “Windsor and Woodstock Turnpike,” which had two toll-gates – one near the Goodwin place and the other near the Hemenway place."

One of these may have included what is now known as the Cady Brook Rd. ( now a trail (2023)) which passes from the Jenneville Rd ove the hill to South Woodstock's Folding Hills Road)
