About Rabbi Isaac Selig Caro ABD Hanover

Rabbi Yitzchok Selig Caro was an eminent 18th century German Jewish Talmudist and Halachic authority. He was born in Glogau and later taught Torah in the community. He was the Av Beit Din of Kalisch from 1714-1730, the ABD of Breslau from 1730-1733, the ABD of Posen from 1734-1735, and the ABD of Dessau and Zuelz from 1735-1740. His last position was ABD of Hannover from 1740-1755, a position he served until his passing. In 1735, Rabbi Yitzchok Selig joined the rest of the rabbinical world in opposing Rabbi Moshe Chayim Luzzatto and was among the signatories of the mass Cherem issued against him and his works. In 1752, a new controversy erupted between R’ Yaakov Emden and R’ Yonasan Eibeschutz, in which the latter was accused of being a Sabbatean heretic, and both sides sought support from other leading rabbinical authorities. In 1753, R' Yitzchok Selig supported R’ Yaacov Emden and became one of the foremost opponents of R’ Yonasan Eibeschutz. However in 1755, after R’ Eibeschutz published the sefer Luchot HaEdut vindicating himself, R’ Yitzchok Selig was convinced of the former’s innocence and defected to the former's side. R' Yitzchok Selig passed away later that year on the 15th of Sivan. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery of Hannover.
