Questions on Birth Date

Rachel Robins is described as being baptised on 20 November 1631 St. Mary Magdalen Milk Street, London,[1] to parents Edward Robins and Jane Cornish. Problematically the same couple baptised another daughter called Rachel on 3 October 1638.[2] Parents often did this but only when the older child had passed away. Edward Robins and Jane Cornish had two surviving children at Edward's decease in about 1641, Elizabeth and Rachel. George Puddington became their stepfather, and he mentioned "my son Richard Beard's children" in his will.

The sources seem to conflict, because a Rachel Robins born in 1638 would be too young to have married Richard Beard in or before 1649, as is cited to be the case.

Another issue is that when George Puddington transported his wife and family to Virginia in the late 1640s, the list included his step-daughter Elizabeth Robins, but not Rachel Robins (see below).

"for Transporting himself and Seven person into this Province the last Year Viz: Jane Puddington, Elizabeth Robins, Mary Puddington, Comfort Puddington, Thomas Hipsley, John Burrage and Margaret Joye". 17 March [1649?, perhaps earlier].[3]

Perhaps the Rachel born in 1631 did survive and was already in Virginia, but it is still unheard of that parents would give two living children the same name. This casts some doubt on Rachel's parentage.

Further Note

The Anna Arundel County Genealogical Society has Rachel Robins born in Virginia.

Marriage

Rachel married Richard Beard III (1626-1675) in 1649. They moved to Anne Arundel County, MD in 1650.

There is recorded among the deeds of Northampton County, Virginia the marriages of both Richard Beard and William Burgess of Providence in the Province of Maryland on 25 Aug 1657 in a land deed approved by their wives, Rachell and Elizabeth, the daughters & heirs of Edward Robins, Merchant of Northampton (alias Accawmacke). [4] It is uncertain whether this deed has been quoted verbatim or adds information gleaned from other research (in italics), so the original deed would need to be seen.

Research Notes

Removed because research into father suggests that only he travelled to America that year: "Rachel and her family were transported to Virginia, Aug. 21, 1635, on the ship Thomas by Mr. Henry Taverner. They were in Accomack County, Virginia by May 1, 1637. She was orphaned by 1646 when Elizabeth and Rachel Robins were granted 350 acres in Northampton County for the transportation of seven persons."

Colonel Edward Robins (M, #183983, d. 4 June 1646) was the son of Richard Robins and Dorothy Goodman. He married Jane Cornish, daughter of Richard Cornish and Grace Gooding, on 16 April 1630 at Northampton, Northamptonshire, England.1 He died on 4 June 1646 at Northampton, Virginia, U.S.A..[2]
