The first daughter of Joseph Wells. Her mother, Rachel, died in childbirth or soon after, and she was named for her mother. That mother's surname at birth is unknown. Some have thought it was Marsh or other names, but I have checked out all that I encountered and found none to be correct.
Her step-mother, Margaret Swanson, raised her, so is often mistakenly stated as her mother.

bullet General Notes:
Even though there has been no document found proving the parentage of Margaret Swanson, her parents must be Francis Swanson, Jr. and Susannah Plummer. "Swanson's lot" where they lived adjoined the Wells land. There was no other Swanson family in Maryland at the time. (C-575, p.53) CD-ROM 102 gives her an alternate birth date of about 1692 in Md. (C-586) She may or may not be the mother of Rachel Wells. If Rachel Wells birth date and Margaret's marriage to Joseph Wells is as stated then she is not the mother of Rachel Wells. Controversy on the dates leaves this parentage in question.
Margaret married Joseph WELLS, son of Thomas Duckett WELLS and Frances SMITH, on Apr 11, 1721 in All Hallows Episcopal, Anne Arundel, MD, USA.1117 (Joseph WELLS was born on Sep 30, 1697 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George, MD 883 and died after Jul 20, 1804 in , Orange, NC.)
If this marriage date is correct, and Rachel Well's birth took place a year earlier, it is possible that Rachel's mother is not Margaret as stated in most sources. (C-866)
