Lewis Historical Publishing Company - 1914 Rev. Daniel Kirkland, son of Lieutenant John (2) Kertland or Kirtland, was born June 17, 1701, died in 1773, at the age of seventy-two years. He was very poor when he died and he grave was not marked with a stone, so that now the spot where he is buried is unknown. He attended Yale College from when he was graduated in 1720. He studied theology, and December 10, 1723, was ordained the first pastor of the Third Church, in Norwich (Newent). He preached in that church for thirty years, and then was obliged to give it up as he became deranged. He was father of Rev. Samuel Kirkland, the well-known missionary to the Oneida Indians for forty years or more, and he was grandfather of President John Thornton Kirkland, of Harvard University. He married, July 15, 1723, Mary Perkins, probably daughter of Jabez and Hannah (Lothrop) Perkins.
