William Adams was born on 27 May 1650 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, son of William Adams and Elizabeth Stacey. William graduated from Harvard in 1671 with his Bachelor of Arts degree. It was said “he came from thence with the esteem and respect of his teachers, and with a character for integrity, learning and piety that gave promise of future usefulness.” He was called to the charge of the church at Dedham in 1671 and was ordained on 3 December 1673, becoming the second Pastor at Dedham. He subsequently received his Master of Arts degree from Harvard.

William married first Mary Manning on 15 October 1674 in Dedham. She was the daughter of William Manning of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

William and Mary had three children. Mary died on 24 June 1679 and William married Alice Bradford the following March. William and Alice had four children, all born in Dedham.

William preached the election sermon at the Massachusetts General Court on 27 May 1685 but died on the following 17 August in Dedham, four months before the birth of his last child, Abiel.
