The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Richard Smith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 21 August 1864, while serving with Company B, 95th New York Infantry, in action at Weldon Railroad, Virginia. Private Smith captured two officers and 20 men of Hagood's brigade while they were endeavoring to make their way back through the woods. General Orders: Date of Issue: March 13, 1865
