--------------------------- (It seems there must be another Robert Clerk in Australia in 1841 and before that - he is referred to as "Secretary to the Government", but our Robert would only be 19 years old at this time)
---------------------------- (James Andrews) left Scotland in 1832 to join his uncle, Mr. Charles Peters, at ibn gal, who had sent for him and his widowed mother. After a period of farming he joined the late Mr. Robert Clerk, and they worked Malahide estate in partnership.

THE SERJEANT-AT-ARMS. (To the Editor.) Sir,-Your contributor "Argus," who was doubtless brought up at Court, is far more interesting in the dress of the serjeant-at-arms than the Hobart people, who do not care anything about the matter. I would suggest to your correspondent that the official in question; not being in the heyday of youth, may have been afraid to don the silk stockings during the winter season, and indeed it would be nothing short of cruelty to ask even a serjeant-at-arms to go about so lightly clad during the present severe weather. Then, again, he may have adopted the "pants" by reason of attenuated lower extremities. I have seen some clerical dignitaries in the streets whose appearance would have been vastly improved by the adoption of "pants." At any rate, there seems to be no fixed rule in this matter of dress,
- **as the !ate Mr. Robert Clerk, who was the beau ideal of a serjeant-at-arms, used to wear the very same kind of "pants" with his Court dress...***
