Biography
Robert Taliaferro, son of John “the Ranger” Taliaferro and Sarah Smith, was born about 1689 in Rappahannock County (Essex County was not formed until 1692) to John Taliaferro and Sarah Smith, and died 01 Feb 1727/28. [1]
He probably married first to a woman possibly named Ann. Their daughter was
- Martha Taliaferro. Named in his 1729 will, presumably of age at that time. She is not named in Matthews records.
He married to Elizabeth Matthews, daughter of Samuel Matthews and Elizabeth Paulin, Bef 17 Jun 1723 at St. Mary's Parish, Essex County.
Their 2 daughters born at St Mary’s Parish, Essex County:
- Mary Taliaferro b about 1724. Married Maximillian Berryman
- Elizabeth Taliaferro b abt 1625 - married Samuel Hildrup
According to one source, one of Robert Taliaferro's daughter married a Mr. Bowler.

His Spotsylvania Co. VA will dated 1 Feb 1728 is one of the most important sources on him:[2]
Will of Robert Taliaferro, dated 1 Feb 1728; probated 4 Feb 1728. To brother John Taliaferro, land in spots. Co. Wife (no name given) land in Essex Co; daughters Mary and Elizabeth Taliaferro “that they will not convey unto Mr. George Braxton the land in King & Queen Co. which I have sold him, that then I give and bequeath in Essex Co to him and his heirs forever.” Dau. Martha Taliaferro; brother Richard Taliaferro. Testator mentions Negroes and chattels in Spotsylvania Co he brought down into Essex Co. on my plantation there.

John Taliaferro, Sr. was born about 1654. He is called "The Ranger." He married Sarah Smith. Sarah was the daughter of Major Lawrence Smith and Mary Debnam.
