In 1850 Census, living w/wife Eliza and children ( baby Fanny & son William). He is a "turner."
News obituary: "Robert W. Patterson aged 74 years, died Saturday afternoon at the home of his son, 5725 Walnut street. Mr. Patterson was born in Pittsburg and he lived here all his life. He has been connected with a number of business enterprises and was a conspicuous figure during the earlier days. Deceased was a member of the firm of Hill & Patterson, lumber dealers. A wife, one son and two daughters survive him. The funeral will be held at 2:30 P.M. tomorrow."

In an 1860 Census Robert's occupation is "turner." His mother-in-law Jane Sands lives with the family and states that she was born in Ireland. 1850 US Census - Jane Sands / born Ireland. (Later records state her birthplace as Pennsylvania.) In an 1861 Pittsburgh city directory, R.W. Patterson lives at 16 Scott (his mother-in-law Jane is at same address.) R.W.'s profession is "turning and scroll sawing." (pg. 133). A Patterson & Sons saw mill is listed on same page at Beaver & Rebecca.
In May-June 1863 he receives notice of his being drafted into the Civil War. He lives in the Sixth Ward of PA (Allegheny), the 22nd Congressional district, he is "Class 2." He will be 39yrs. on July 1st. This is the right Robert because he lists his occupation as "turner."

1870 Census - his occupation is "planing mill" - value of real estate is $12,000, personal estate is $700. Mother-in-law is living with them (Jane Sands, age 84). Home is Pittsburg Ward 7, Allegheny, PA. Another family "Gray" - 9 people - are living under same roof with them.
In 1873 Pittsburgh, a city directory lists Robert (residing at 16 Scott [pg.216]%29 as a turner working at "Hill, Patterson and Co. - a planing mill". In the same directory, on pg. [image] 131 the company is listed at 50 Old Ave. On the same pg. 131 is listed Thomas Hill of Hill, Patterson and Co. living at 21 Centre Ave. So Robert's partner is Thomas Hill.
1880 PA Census listed his address as 16 Scott Pl./Pittsburgh, PA.
1880 PA " occupation listed as "planing mill" - he was in lumber. In a city directory of 1881-82, R.W. Patterson, works at Hill & Patterson, 16 Scott. R.W. Patterson boards at the East End Hotel (boarding there in 1879/80 directory, as well). (In the same directory, son Harvey S. is a bookkeeper at Mellor, Hoene& Henricks, res. 16 Scott.) Pittsburg directory 1881-1882. Hill & Patterson is a planing mill. Mellor, Hoene & Henricks is a Piano and Organ retailer. A Thos. Hill of Hill & Patterson lives at 21 Centre Ave. There is a separate listing for Hill & Patterson, planing mill, Old Ave and Boyd.
In a 1886/87 directory, home is 251 Locust. Home for son Harvey is 724 Ivy.
In the official "Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh City Deaths, 1870-1905 (FamilySearch)" Robert is listed as having died 02 Oct 1897 in Pittsburgh, age 74. The address given is 5725 Walnut St., Pittsburgh - the address is the same as son Harvey Sharp Patterson in other records. Son, Harvey is married to Annie Eliza by then and having children.
A Census of 1900 - Jennie & mother Eliza are living together with no Robert W. In this census, Jennie states birthplace of father is Massachusetts. Might not be the right Eliza & Jennie.
In the April 1908 obituary of son Harvey, the paper refers to dad Robert as the well-known Pittsburgh lumber dealer.
